Season 2007/08 sees a first for Scottish ice hockey. SIHL have decided to put an Under 19 National team into the Scottish National League. Under the guidance of Jim Watson and Ian Coyle and some assistance from Charlie Ward, the team is starting to take shape and has already had a couple of practices at Glasgow’s Braehead Arena.
Stuart Wilson will coach the team and the Management will be Ross Noble and Brian Murdoch.
The main goals for the season are not only to be competitive in every game but to also assist in the development of the 50 or so players that will wear our colours. It is hoped that by playing in the League, we will be better prepared for the annual challenge against England at Nottingham. However the main gains will be the experience of playing in a league that players might not get at club level and to train with players of a SPHL/SNL level on a regular basis.
There is already a strong interest in this team and the practices so far have been encouraging. The standard of player at these training sessions has been better than hoped, with all players looking hungry to do well at this level. There are still a number of players that we have still to see or contact, if you are interested in more information about playing for us, contact us through the SIHL website.
As well as training out of Braehead, we intend to play home games on Fridays as well. A number of volunteers will be required from scorers to timekeepers, goal judges and stewards. If you are interested and can help, contact us through the SIHL website.
There has already been a lot of work and time spent on making this tem a success, that along with the eagerness of the players to improve and do well, there are exciting times ahead for the Scotland U/19 National Team.
There will be a fortnightly newsletter produced which will have information on the players, fixtures and results. You will be able to access the newsletter on the Under 19s page in the National Teams Section of the SIHL website. |
